What Will Wreck My Artificial Grass

Artificial grass is known for its ease of care and durability. It isn't prone to pest activity or lawn disease like natural grass, and it is also highly resistant to damage. However, that doesn't mean that synthetic turf is indestructible. There are still some things that can damage your artificial grass. Read on to learn more about some of the most common culprits and what you can do about them. To schedule a consultation for all thing artificial grass, call The Synthetic Turf Co. today!

Fire or Sparks

We probably don't need to tell you that it is not a good idea to set your turf on fire, but your synthetic grass could still be at risk if you have an outdoor grill or fire pit. Hot coals, wood chips, burning food, and even chunks of ash blowing in the wind can land on your turf. While it likely won't catch on fire, the extreme heat can melt the grass blades, destroying the look and texture of your artificial grass. If you have a barbecue, be sure to place it on a patio a safe distance from your lawn to minimize the risk of anything falling on it.

Sharp Objects

Gardening tools, grilling implements, and other sharp items can tear the backing of your turf. If your synthetic grass gets cut or torn, it can be challenging and sometimes expensive to fix. If you'll be gardening around the edges of your turf, don't set any tools directly on the turf. Instead, use a tray, tarp, or other barrier to hold your tools and protect your artificial lawn. Never puncture your synthetic grass with yard decorations or other items on spikes.

Yard Furniture

While many outdoor furniture items are fairly lightweight, that isn't always the case. Heavy furniture can damage not only the turf itself, but also the base underneath, potentially leaving your artificial grass with dents and ripples. Not only does this ruin the look of your lawn, but it can also create a tripping hazard. What's more, the feet of yard furniture can sometimes have sharp edges or corners, compounding the damage even further. Be sure to check the weight rating for your turf so you know what is and isn't safe to put on top of it.

Oils and Chemical Products

Oils, oil-based products, and chemical solutions can be incredibly damaging to artificial grass. Depending on the specific type of oil or chemical, it could leave an unsightly stain that is highly difficult to remove. Other oils and chemicals can even break down or dissolve the materials that make up your artificial grass, resulting in holes. Try to avoid spilling anything on your artificial lawn and use drop cloths to protect your turf if you are painting fences or other outdoor features. Be sure to clean up any spills as quickly as possible to stop the damage before it starts.

Concentrated Sunlight

Artificial grass is designed to withstand the elements, including full sun exposure. However, sunlight reflected off windows or mirrors can concentrate in a focused beam. This results in extreme heat, which can burn or melt your turf. The best way to prevent this is to take care in the design process to take any reflections into account.
