One of the best things about an artificial lawn is that it requires minimal care and upkeep. However, that doesn't mean that you are completely off the hook for synthetic lawn maintenance. Your turf will still require some care, even in the winter, to keep it looking its best. Here's what you need to know to get through the snowy season with your turf intact. Clear Away Any Debris
During fall, your lawn, artificial or natural, can become buried under leaves, twigs, and other debris from trees on your property. Take care to remove any of these items before the snow sets in. Sharp ends on sticks can potentially tear your turf, especially when buried under heavy snow, so make sure your lawn is completely clear before the first snowfall.
Give Your Synthetic Grass a Deep Cleaning
In addition to removing any large debris, you should also clean your artificial grass thoroughly before winter sets in. Hose it down to clear away any dust or spills. The water will drain away on its own, so there is no need to dry. Scrub any trouble areas with mild detergent, like laundry or dish soap. Rinse again with the hose if needed.
Trim Your Trees
While not specifically part of synthetic lawn maintenance, pruning any trees on your property with help preserve your artificial turf over the winter. As leaves and branches fall, they can tear the turf underneath, so it is important to minimize this risk as much as possible. Remove any weak or dying branches so they don't fall on your lawn.
Leave Snow Alone
Once the snow starts falling, there's nothing for you to do except wait until spring. Snow and frost won't damage your turf in the slightest, so feel free to just leave it be. If you wish to use your lawn during winter, you can remove any snow with a snowblower or broom. Don't use a snow shovel, as the sharp edges can damage the backing of your turf. Rips and tears can be costly to repair, so the last thing you want is to damage your artificial lawn.
Take Care with Frost
When the temperature drops, frost can form on your synthetic lawn. Do not do anything to try to remove it. Ice can grip onto artificial grass blades and tear them when pulled off. If you really need to remove frost, rinse with warm or room temperature water to help melt the ice away before sweeping or snow-blowing.
Wait Until Thaw to Restore Your Lawn
When the weather begins to warm back up again in the springtime, you'll undoubtedly want to get right back to using your artificial lawn. However, rushing to remove frost and snow can cause damage to your turf, so wait for any ice to melt on its own. One your grass is fully clear, you can get back into synthetic lawn maintenance. Remove any additional debris, then rake your lawn against the grain of the grass blades. This will help them stand back up again once the weight of the snow has lifted.
