How Does Synthetic Grass Stand Up to BBQ Season?

How Does Synthetic Grass Stand Up to BBQ Season?Synthetic grass looks great and is long-lasting, but you may be wondering how it will hold up if you plan to grill frequently throughout the summer months. Having a BBQ is a great way to enjoy the beautiful weather while having a good time eating great food with your friends. However, you don't want all of that fun to destroy your artificial lawn. Here's what you need to know.  Call us today to for a free synthetic grass consultation.

What Happens to Synthetic Grass in Extreme Heat?

The good news is that synthetic grass is not flammable, so there is no need to worry about your entire lawn going up in flames due to errant embers or dropped coals. It will, however, melt when exposed to extreme heat, so it is best to keep your BBQ at least 10 feet away from your lawn, just like you would keep it at a safe distance from your home. If you keep logs, wood chips or charcoal for your BBQ outside, keep those safely away from your turf as well.

If you don't have the space in your yard to keep the grill away from your synthetic grass, the next best option is to create a stone base for it. This will keep the BBQ stable and secure while also protecting your lawn. Don't use wood planks or any other flammable material, as this could put your synthetic lawn in even more danger. Even a simple floor mat (non-flammable of course) can provide some level of protection.

What About Dropped Food?

When cooking food on a grill and eating outdoors, it is inevitable that some will eventually fall to the ground, potentially landing on your  artificial lawn. Unless the food is falling directly from the hot grill, it is unlikely that it will melt the turf, but grease, crumbs, sauces, and other debris can still make quite a mess. Do your best to clean it up right away to prevent staining.

In most cases, a simple hose-down will be enough to clean your synthetic grass. For stubborn messes, you can also use mild soap and water to keep your turf looking its best. Once it has dried, give it a quick brush with a broom to ensure the grass blades stand tall and lush.

Can Melted Turf Be Repaired?

Unfortunately, there is no easy fix for turf that has melted. You'll need to remove the damaged section of synthetic grass and replace it with fresh turf. Depending on the type and quality of your turf, this can be a bit costly, so it is best to prevent this type of damage from happening in the first place.
